Stormy Weather in My Neighborhood

By Bambang Udoyono

There are only two seasons in my country- dry season and rainy season. Today we are in the transition period between dry season which starts in April, to rainy season which starts in October. Usually rain starts falling in late September. But this early October out of a sudden rain fall very hard. At the first of October rain fell very very hard. The next day it was not only rain but a storm. The rain was very hard and the wind was very strong. In adition, there was fog. Visibility was very low.
In the middle of the storm and fog all activities were stopped. People just stayed at home. There wss no electricity so we could not watch television or use any electronic devices. So I just sat in my sitting room and talked to my family and neighbors. One of them told me that my uncle’s house had collapsed because of the storm. I was very surpeised to hear the news because his house is the best and the strongest one here.
My uncle lives in the same neighborhood. His name is Samsuddin. I address him as uncle Sam. He is the richest man in our neighborhood. His house is the best one here. He lives in the northern part of my neighborhood. Although he lives very close to my house, he never comes to see me. Maybe he is very busy with his business.
Suddenly someone knocked my door outloud. I opened it and a friend of mine stood there. Soon I asked him to get in. He told me that some houses in my neighborhood had collapsed including his house. He also told me that some people had used the disaster to steal from houses and stores. There were looting everywhere. I began to feel nervous. What will happen to my house ? Will it collapse ? if it collapse, where will I live then ? What should I do ? I have no idea. Do you ?
